The acclaimed director challenges his film-making abilities in this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well even without a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. But the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, though the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4
