Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
